Hydrate-based Desalination & Water Purification

Due to increased population as well as the large expansion in industrial activities, many countries suffer from a shortage of fresh water. Owing to the abundance of seawater, desalination has become a promising source of fresh water. In addition, the treatment of waste water is an issue for safe reuse because waste water poses severe threats to crops and aquatic life. Hydrate-based desalination and water purification have recently been suggested as potential applications for more efficient desalination and water purification processes. Gas hydrate consists of only water and guest molecules such as methane or carbon dioxide. When gas hydrates form, salts and other impurities are excluded from the cages and left behind. After dehydration and dissociation processes , guest molecules and pure water are released.
